The PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha AHM rider explained completing the race and picking up points is top priority as he believes Malaysian riders stand a slim chance against Indonesian teams who have the added advantage racing on home-track. Furthermore, the second leg of the season will see a lot of local wildcards participate in the Underbone 115cc category.
In addition to that, he views the 3.964 kilometer track to be very challenging as it is very bumpy and it features several high-speed turns.
Shahril commented, "My objective for the upcoming round is to finish the race, pick up Championship points and extend my lead in the standings. If possible, I want to finish on the podium but if that fails a top five position would suffice."
"The Indonesia leg has always been tough on us Malaysians because local riders possess the upper hand here. They understand the track better, its lining, conditions and environment. Furthermore, the competition level will be very high with several local wildcards barring great credentials joining us," said Shahril who leads the standings with 40 points having finished both Race 1 and Race 2 at the Sepang International Circuit (Round 1) in second place.
The 25 years old however maintains an optimistic mindset for the race next weekend saying that there are a lot more opportunities for him to win a race.
"It's alright if I don't win the upcoming leg because the Championship is still in its early stages with four more rounds to go after Indonesia- plenty of opportunities to win a race. I am in a good position right now leading the standings so as long as points are picked up consistently, I stand a chance to fight for this season's title. Furthermore, the following rounds will commence on neutral territories so it will be a fair fight for everyone."
He went on to add, "Nonetheless, I will still try my best this weekend. In Sepang our Yamaha has proven to be very competitive and with minor adjustments I'm pretty sure we can put up a good fight. Couple that with a good race strategy, we will not be overshadowed so easily," concluded Shahril.
While Shahril tops the chart, second comes in Mohd Rozaliman Zakaria (ZAR Racing Motorsport) with 36 points followed by defending Champion, Hadi Wijaya (Kawasaki NHK Rextor Manual Tech) third, 26 points.
